Goals—How To Set Them and How To Stick To Them by Dave Cleinman Setting goals is frequently employed by top-caliber athletes, successful business people, and all types of high achievers in all kinds of fields. Goals give you short and long-term motivation and intent and help you focus on the acquisition of required knowledge. They help you to plan and organize your resources and your time so that you can get the very best out yourself as you progress through life. Setting clearly defined short term and long term goals will enable you to measure your progress and achieve personal satisfaction as you successfully meet your goals. Charting your progress will allow you to see the steps forward you are making towards the realization of your goals. This reinforces your efforts and eliminates the occasional frustration you can feel when you have setbacks on the path to achieving a goal. Your self-confidence and level of competence will also increase as your efforts produce better and faster results as your skills increase and you get closer to achieving your goals. Setting goals requires that you decide what you really want to do with your life and what short term and long term actions you need to take to achieve it. Then you break down the actions into the smaller and manageable targets that you must complete to achieve your lifetime goals. Once you have your determined your goals, there is no reason to waste any time in going after them. A good way to manage your to-do list is to have a daily and weekly set of actions en route to accomplishing your goals. This will keep you on track towards your monthly and yearly goals. Daily action will allow you to fulfill each small goal giving you a feeling of accomplishment and keeping you on target towards your larger goals. Consider these points when setting your goals and creating your action plan. · Attitude plays a vital role in setting and achieving your goals. You must ask yourself if any of your thoughts or beliefs are holding you back from completing your simplest plans. Are any of your behaviors hindering you or undermining your plans? Take stock of this and sit down and create a separate set of goals to help you conquer your personal demons. In rare cases a counselor or other help may be needed, but most of the time simply being aware of your own negative thoughts will be sufficient to eliminate them in favor of positive and forward thinking. · A business succeeds by good time management and organization. Include this in your plans. An action plan should be accompanied by a schedule and a priority list. Ensure that you are doing IGAs (Income Generating Activities) every day, first and foremost. · If your goals require you to have a certain kind of information, or require a certain specialization, or demand a certain skill to be developed, make plans for getting the appropriate education and training. This is available all over the internet and is invariably worth the investment. · Make sure that your family is part of your plans. No matter how busy you are, or how pressing your goals are, your family should be part of your long term goals and daily activities. · An example of how to go about creating a goal plan is to start with a long-term time period, say 25 years, then break it into 10 years plans, to five years, then annual, semi-annual, monthly and daily goals. Then create your daily action plan, with space and time built in for the unexpected. Making plans and setting goals is not a difficult process, and can always be tweaked and adjusted as needed. There is a tremendous amount of information regarding how to do this all over the internet and in print. As with any major life change, getting started is the hardest part. ◄
